About Healthy Green Goods
At Healthy Green Goods, we believe that dangerous chemicals do not belong in the products you use every day.
Most manufacturers, however, don’t agree. In fact, they not only think that it’s okay to put toxic chemicals into the products you buy, but they also think that it is okay to hide these chemicals or even lie about them being there! They are also willing to spend millions of dollars lobbying the government to prevent stricter labeling laws that would force them to truthfully disclose their ingredients.

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a nine-week summer work experience for in-school Evanston youth 14 to 18 years of age. The City and local businesses employ SYEP participants to perform a variety of full and part-time tasks to include bank tellers, office assistance, computer/software installation and maintenance, data entry, reception, camp counselors, building maintenance/custodial, painting, food service, and grounds maintenance.
To compete for a summer job, teens must meet all eligibility requirements and they must attend and participate in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program Job Fair. Here is an opportunity for teens to plan their summer employment experiences and meet and interview with employers who have jobs available for them. Teens should come to the Job Fair appropriately dressed for success.
Teens will also complete applications; review and select jobs that they are interested in pursuing; and participate in a session designed to help begin the development of or to improve interview skills. Last year, teens performed a variety of jobs including office assistants, camp counselors, field assistants, custodians, health aides, production assistants, inclusion aides and program assistants.
In addition, teens are assigned to the community service team where they perform tasks that include green collar jobs, the cleaning of parkways, alleys, traffic calming circles and some parks. There is also a paint crew that has taken on such projects as painting traffic signals and boxes.
The Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program was created in 1992 to provide summer employment opportunities for Evanston youth. Since that time, over 2,000 Evanston youth between the ages of 14 through 18 have been placed in seasonal employment by the City of Evanston and local businesses.

Alice in Wonderland Performance
March 1, 2009 by Mr. Ofni
The Evanston Dance Ensemble returns one of its most popular productions in the company’s 12-year history to the stage in 2009, presenting Alice in Wonderland at The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie.
Under the artistic direction of Béa Rashid and Christina Ernst, Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of Alice’s trip down the rabbit hole is retold through innovative dance created by some of the top talents in the Chicago dance community and set on the 28 members of the youth dance company, who will be joined on the stage by several guest dance professionals.
Six years ago, EDE presented the company’s original production of Alice in Wonderland to sold-out audiences. In their re-interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, co-artistic directors Rashid and Ernst have added new scenes, new choreography, new characters, and stylistically have given the production a more contemporary feel.
“We are keeping the wonderful elements of our original production - the breathtaking costumes, the beautiful scenery, some of the original score - and we’re building on what was a very well-received production,” explains EDE founder Béa Rashid. “This is our 12th season and our ensemble members have had more dance training and more dance experience than when we created the show six years ago. Christina and I felt like we could advance the story with more rhythm-based choreography that is a bit more challenging for the dancers, but adds even more excitement to the production.”
Choreography for the 2009 production of Alice in Wonderland will be provided by professional artists from throughout the Chicago area, including: Mike Gosney, founder and director of Elements Contemporary Ballet; Allison Kurtz, associate program director for Dance Center Evanston and ensemble member of Striding Lion InterArts Workshop; Meghann Rose Wilkinson, ensemble member of Lucky Plush Productions; Julie Cartier, artistic director of Especially Tap Chicago Dance Company; and Stephanie Paul, co-founder and artistic director of Be the Groove. Dancer Ben Law, of Lucky Plush Productions, will be dancing the role of “The Mad Hatter,” and Kevin Durnbaugh of Be the Groove will give life to “The Duchess.” Special guest Craig Sjogerman, the creator of The Dr. Gesundheit Clown Therapy Show, plays “The King of Hearts” in the EDE production. The set design for the production is from Chicago artist Jim Estes and costumes have been created by Kitty Schweitzer, who is currently building costumes for the Broadway production of “Shrek.” Musician and composer Steve Rashid will contribute a few new pieces to the score for the 2009 production.
